How can I import/export from ClarisWorks or AppleWorks into HanDBase Desktop for Macintosh?

ClarisWorks is also known as AppleWorks. These instructions will work with ClarisWorks 4.0, but they may not be correct for AppleWorks and other versions of ClarisWorks.

To import a HanDBase database into ClarisWorks:

First use HanDBase Desktop for Macintosh to create a CSV file. In the Make CSV window, choose Tab as the separator (not comma), and make sure that "Field names on first line" and "Quote field contents" are unchecked. You can use the CSV file to create a new ClarisWorks database, or add it to an existing ClarisWorks database.

To create a new ClarisWorks document containing the data from the CSV file:

Open ClarisWorks, and choose Open from the File menu. In the dialog that appears, choose Database from the Document Type popup, and choose Text (or All Available) from the File Type popup. Then find and open the CSV file. A new ClarisWorks database window will open, and the data from the CSV file will appear in the window. All fields in the new database will be of type Text.

To add the CSV file's data to an existing ClarisWorks database:

Open the ClarisWorks database, and choose Insert from the File menu. In the dialog that appears, choose Text (or All Available) from the Show popup. Then find and open the CSV file. A dialog will appear allowing you to preview the data and match the fields in the CSV file to the fields in the ClarisWorks database; make sure the fields match, then click OK to import the data. No existing entries in your ClarisWorks database will be changed; the data from the CSV file will be used to create new records that are added to the ClarisWorks database.

The most common scenario is probably a set of data that you maintain in both a ClarisWorks database and in a HanDBase database. There is no simple way to perform an update in both directions (HanDBase Desktop for Macintosh is not a conduit). To update your ClarisWorks database with the latest info in the HanDBase database, simply delete all records from the ClarisWorks database before you do the insert. (We recommend that you either perform a backup before deleting all records, or else work on a copy of the original ClarisWorks database until you are certain that the entire operation was successful.)

Note: ClarisWorks cannot handle tabs within fields in text files (quoting the field doesn't work). ClarisWorks can handle other interchange formats (such as DIB, DIF, and SYLK) that permit richer data than text files do, but HanDBase Desktop for Macintosh cannot create those formats.

To export a ClarisWorks database into HanDBase:

Open the ClarisWorks database and choose Save As from the File menu. In the dialog that appears, choose Ascii Text from the Save As popup, and save the file. You can now use HanDBase Desktop for Macintosh to convert this file into a HanDBase database. In the Make PDB window, choose Tab as the separator (not comma), and make sure that "Field names on first line" is unchecked. Convert the database and install on your Palm, and you're done. For more information about creating HanDBase databases, see the HanDBase Desktop Manual.
