Scarab of Ra is the classic pyramid-exploration game from the glory days of Macintosh shareware.

You are an archaeology student, following the great explorer Mississippi Smith on his most challenging expedition. Enter the lost Great Pyramid of Ra and explore its increasingly-complex mazes, coping with animals and traps, and seeking the three Sacred Talismans of Ra the Sun-God!

First released in 1987 for the Macintosh Plus, and long considered one of the classics of Macintosh shareware, this new version faithfully recreates the original game with its original artwork in glorious, fat-pixel black and white!

But there's more—this new version includes optional features offering new tools to find and use, and new hazards to contend with. And if you ever tire of those pesty animals or horrid traps, you can now tone them down to suit your preferences!

New Features

Animal Ferocity - Monkeys getting you down? Cobras won't leave you alone? The Animal Ferocity setting lets you choose animal behavior, from the original fierce-and-persistent through two progressively easier settings, or choose to have no animals at all.

Tools - This new version can offer new tools to find and use. These include "path markers" and other items to help you navigate the maze, parchment sheets for your map that are immune to being soaked by the water traps, a new way to cope with animals, and even a sledgehammer that (with effort!) will allow you to break right through walls to make shortcuts in the mazes. If you prefer the original game, you can turn off the new tools in your settings.

Hazards - New Hazards options include two new kinds of hazard to encounter in the Great Pyramid, and easier settings for the traps that range from the original on down to no traps at all.

  • Retro Graphics - The artwork from the original version for the Mac Plus!
  • Point of View - Get the explorer's-eye-view of the interior of the Great Pyramid!
  • Every Game Is Different - This game isn't over after you've won the first time. There's a different game every time you play.
  • Built-In Help - You don't have to know much to get started, but when you want more info, Help and Hints are at your fingertips.
  • Automatic Mapping - Mapping's important. Move carefully through the pyramid, and your map will be drawn for you automatically as you explore.
